Every great river deserves a great festival and the Ottawa River is no exception. However, unlike most rivers, the Ottawa is really two different rivers depending on the season. May has exceptionally big water on the Main Channel with giants like Bus Eater and Coliseum while the Labour Day Weekend has summer water levels making the river fun rather than ferocious.

Ottawa Kayak School is going to be hosting the Ottawa River Festival 2011 with part 1 on the May Long weekend and part 2 on the Labour Day weekend.

Both events will cater to every level of paddling ability. Even in May, the 175 islands forming this paradise offer opportunities from beginner to expert. With a day on the beach learning the wet exit, strokes and concepts and the all-important kayak roll, a run the down the Middle Channel can be done with first-timers. By utilizing such beginner favorites as pinball and lost channel, novice paddlers can have alongside intermediate boaters. There is even enough on the Middle for the most advanced paddler but they will probably be on Main with its world class features.

Although the Ottawa is arguably the world’s best freestyle river, there are plenty of river opportunities for white-water and flat water canoeing and sea kayaking. Clinics will be available for every discipline and every level of ability. The Festival will feature two days of clinics, Friday night film festival, great food and of course, a wonderful party Saturday night.
